What does the DOT Return to Duty process involve?
The DOT Return to Duty process is a multi-step program that includes a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation, a treatment or education plan, a return-to-duty drug or alcohol test, and follow-up testing. Employees must complete all steps to regain eligibility for safety-sensitive duties.
How do I find a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)?
Choosing a DOT-qualified professional is essential to meet federal rules. Employees can get a list of DOT-certified SAPs from their employer, search online, or call goMDnow at 980-655-4455.
Can I work a non-DOT job while completing the Return to Duty process?
Yes, you can work in non-DOT-regulated positions while completing the process. However, you cannot perform any DOT-regulated jobs until you provide a negative RTD test.
What happens if I miss a follow-up drug or alcohol test?
Missing a follow-up test is considered a violation of DOT regulations and may result in removal from duty. Employees must strictly comply with the SAP’s follow-up testing plan to maintain their eligibility.
Will my DOT violation be reported to the FMCSA Clearinghouse?
Yes, all drug and alcohol violations for CDL drivers are reported to the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, where they remain on record for five years or until the Return to Duty process is completed.
What types of DOT drug tests are used in the Return to Duty process?
The Return to Duty test and all follow-up tests use a directly observed urine drug test, which screens for substances such as marijuana, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, and PCP.
Can I switch SAP providers during the process?
While it is possible to switch SAPs, doing so may delay the process since a new SAP must review previous evaluations and determine a new treatment plan. It is recommended to stay with one SAP to avoid complications.
What are the costs associated with the DOT Return to Duty process?
Complete RTD includes SAP evaluation fees, treatment or education costs, and drug and alcohol testing expenses. Prices vary based on the SAP provider and treatment plan. For CTPA services, the Return to duty program price at goMDnow is $199 plus drug tests.
How can I check my status in the DOT Return to Duty process?
CDL drivers can check their FMCSA Clearinghouse account to monitor their violation and return-to-duty status. For non-CDL safety-sensitive employees, contacting the SAP or employer is the best way to verify progress.
